I didn't want a second child.
Well, not exactly, when I found out that my wife was pregnant with our 2nd baby, I was shocked.
The year before was a crazy one for us.
Our daughter was born with a heart defect.
She had open heart surgery at 4 months old and needless to say it was extremely stressful.
We were finally doing great, my work was amazing, I loved our house, and the three of us had achieved a real groove. Life was perfect.
Then I saw the stick with the 2 blue lines. All I could think was "oh shit, I'm not ready for this"
I wasn't prepared for another round of uncertainty.
Another 9 months of worrying if our baby was going to have a rare disease.
Another 9 months of constant back and forth to the ER because of my wife's gallstone attacks.
And I wasn't prepared for the constant thoughts that I wasn't ready for the disruption to my current life.
I know a lot of men struggle with change.
We like things the way they are.
There’s a reason I still have my Nirvana T-shirt from 1991, it's familiar.
But change is inevitable, you can resist it which leads to suffering OR you can learn to adapt.
The problem is how do we adapt?
The resistance we face over change has nothing to do with the change itself. It's the fear of what we are leaving behind that we resist. We do not want to leave the safety of our <man> cave and go out into the unknown.
It doesn't matter if the change is for the better. Change can be scary. Our brain creates thoughts like "But what if it isn't better?", "What if we don't like it there?".
What if you could learn to control your brain?
> Teach it to think of the other side of the equation.
Like, "What will I gain from this change?", "Who will I become?", "What amazing thing is waiting for me on the other side of this?"
Resisting change is futile, change will happen whether you like it or not. Change is inevitable.
They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
It's a good thing we're not dogs.
Adapting to change isn't easy but I can assure you it's worth it.
Having my son was totally worth it.
Worth all the trips to the hospital.
All the worry.
All the change.
